Please join the William Gilmore Simms Society for the inaugural Wigwam! Named in reference to the title of Simms’s 1845 short story collection, The Wigwam and the Cabin, the Wigwam will be an annual gathering of Simmsians at some Simms-connected locale for an evening of food, camaraderie, and discussion of topics relevant to Simms’s place in 19th century intellectual life.
Our inaugural gathering will be held on 22 July 2023, at the historic Francis Marion Hotel in Simms’s hometown of Charleston. Dr. Adam L. Tate of Clayton State University, author of Conservatism and Southern Intellectuals, 1789-1861: Liberty, Tradition, and the Good Society, will deliver our keynote address.
The Wigwam is open to all members of the Society, as well as up to one guest. Registration is $75/person. To register, contact Society secretary-treasurer, W. Matthew J. Simmons. Registration is limited, so be sure to register soon!
A limited number of rooms are available at the Francis Marion at a special discounted rate.
